Design and operating principle of gear pumps
The unit is a housing in which two meshed gears rotate. Depending on the type of gearing, gear pumps with external and internal gearing are distinguished. The housing has suction and discharge pipes. In this case, the hole in the suction pipe is located opposite the place where the gear teeth open, and the hole in the discharge pipe is opposite where they close.
The principle of operation of a gear pump is that at the point where the gears open, a vacuum is formed and, under the influence of a pressure difference, the working fluid is sucked into the housing. It is picked up by the gear teeth, delivered to the opening of the discharge pipe and pushed out.

Advantages of gear pumps
A unique advantage not found in other types of pumps is that the unit can pump the substance in both directions without any design changes. It is enough to change the direction of rotation of the drive, that is, reconnect the terminals on the electric motor.
Other benefits include:
- High pump efficiency (over 90%).
- A wide range of applications - in terms of flow rates, pressures (up to 210 atm) and classes of working fluid - they can pump viscous materials.
- Simplicity of design, reliability.
- Compact, especially for internal gear models.
- High maintainability.
- Fluid pumping without pulsation, which is very important for equipment with hydraulic actuators.
- Low sensitivity to the purity of the pumped material (inclusions up to 0.1 mm are allowed).
- Easy to maintain - does not require lubrication (gears are lubricated with working fluid).
