Electric motors

Compact designs, ease of connection to the pump, easy control automation and relatively low operating costs have determined the widespread use of three-phase electric motors as pump drives in water supply and sanitation systems.

In addition to high power, a number of specific requirements are imposed on the drive motors of pumping units. One of the decisive factors is the need to operate the engines under load. When designing an electric motor, it is also necessary to take into account a sufficiently long rotation of the rotor in the opposite direction (with a rotation speed determined by the characteristics of the pump), caused by water flowing out of the pressure pipelines when the electric motor is disconnected from the network during a planned or emergency shutdown of the unit.

A highly desirable improvement in the operating conditions of power systems where efficient pumping stations are used is the possibility of frequent restarts, which in turn imposes increased requirements on the design of the stator and starting motor windings, the heating of which determines the duration of the required interval between starts and the allowable number of starts in the study period.
