Filtration or filtration is a separation process that can be divided into - mechanical filtration:

• in which there is a separation of macro particles ranging in size from 1000 to 10 microns: sand, flour, hair, granular ion-exchange resins and microparticles of about 10 microns;
• microfiltration - when filtering particulate matter from 10 microns to 0,1 microns. These can be emulsions, bacteria, yeast cells;
• ultrafiltration - separation of macromolecules from 0,1 micron to 0,01 micron. Soot, albumins, viruses, gelatin, fibers;
• nanofiltration - from 0,01 micron to 0,001 micron filtration. Filtration of sugars, pesticides, herbicides;
• reverse osmosis - 0,001 filtration of metal ions, salts.
